Bold vision forms first alliance of its kind in North America
In 2014, the commissioners of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma announced a bold vision: instead of competing, the two ports would join forces and form an alliance to better compete on a global scale.
The Northwest Seaport Alliance was officially formed in August 2015, following comprehensive public outreach and approval from the Federal Maritime Commission. It marks an unprecedented, historical first in North America.
The alliance is a port development authority governed by the two ports as equal members, with each port acting through its elected commissioners. The ports remain separate organizations that retain ownership of their respective assets.
Meet the NWSA’s Managing Members:
Each port is governed by five commissioners elected at large by the citizens of their respective counties. They serve four-year terms and establish policy.
The managing members hold regular public meetings the first Tuesday of the month. Meetings are streamed live on the Web and archived for later viewing on our meetings page.
