NWSA YTD 2025 TEU Volumes Up 15.9%

Strong volumes via the NWSA continued in April as shippers brought orders forward. Full international imports in April increased 8.8%, marking 14 consecutive months of month-over-month growth. Full international exports decreased 1.7%. Total container volume (international and domestic) for the month reached 277,828 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 7.4% compared to April 2024. YTD volumes are up 15.9%, with full imports growing 21.7% and full exports declining 0.5%.

NWSA and Ocean Network Express (ONE) staff were joined by Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co, one of our gateway’s top exporters, in welcoming the 6,014 TEU container vessel Phoebe. The vessel was delivered earlier this year and made her maiden call at Washington United Terminals in the Tacoma (South) Harbor in mid-April. The vessel is operated by ONE and is in rotation on the Premier Alliance’s PN1 service, which offers direct service with ports in China, Taiwan, and Japan, featuring an industry leading 11-day transit from Tokyo. The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system that can transition to ammonia or methanol.

Domestic container volumes increased 2.5% compared to YTD 2024. Alaska volumes increased 1.5%, and Hawaii volumes increased 7.9%.

Other cargo stats:

  • Total breakbulk volume decreased 40.2% for 101,142 metric tons YTD. High interest rates are having a significant impact on agricultural, mining, and construction equipment sales.
  • Auto volumes were 100,082 units, down 17.1% YTD. Volumes reflect the slowing down of auto sales nationwide.
