NWSA operated breakbulk terminals also set new tonnage milestone

NWSA February volumes increased 11.1% to 298,046 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with full imports growing 21.4% and full exports declining 24.2% year-over-year. February 2022 full imports reached an all-time high for the month because of continued strong consumer demand and retail inventory restocking. Year-to-date volumes improved 2.3% to 570,328 TEUs, with full imports growing 9.7% and full exports declining 30%.

Domestic volumes increased 1% compared to YTD February 2021. Alaska volumes increased 0.6% while Hawaii volumes grew 2.4%.

The NWSA welcomed the first all-electric cargo equipment at the Tacoma Harbor’s South Intermodal Yard. The six yard trucks—outfitted with zero-emission technology—will be used to move containers on chassis between container stacks and rail cars.

Other cargo stats:

• NWSA operated breakbulk terminals had a record-breaking month (35,722 metric tons), surpassing the previous high set in July 2021 (30,538 metric tons). YTD breakbulk cargo volumes grew 61% for 71,676 metric tons.
• Auto volumes were 31,320 units, up 39.7% over YTD February 2021 as the demand for autos remains strong.
