The Northwest Seaport Alliance (Seattle + Tacoma) Weekly Volumes & Metrics Report 6/17/25

The week ending June 6 saw a recovery from the significant dip the previous week, but numbers remain depressed compared to the same time last year. International imports increased almost 40% (38.7%) week over week, but the first full week of June was still 21% below the June 2024 weekly average. Truck transactions were up almost 17% compared to the week before, but down just over 17% compared to the June 2024 weekly average.

Monthly numbers for May were also released this week. Both international imports and exports dropped in the month of May, ending a 14-month streak of consecutive growth. Tariffs were a significant factor for this month over month volume reduction. Breakbulk and auto markets, two important non-container lines of business for the NWSA, have seen a substantial decline as well, due to both impacts from tariffs and high interest rates.

Monthly numbers for May were released yesterday, June 17. You can find the full report here.

May volumes dropped month to month and year over year, ending 14 consecutive months of growth. This drop was in large part due to tariffs and coincides with when tariffs with China were at their highest.

International imports were down 21.2% compared to May 2024 and international exports were down 10.7% compared to May 2024. Due to good performance in the first part of the year, and the surge of cargo in advance of tariffs, volumes are still up 10.2% YTD. Volumes are expected to rebound, but the increase may be more conservative than previously anticipated. Our supply chain partners are still prepared for a surge.
